How To Publish Your Own Book Successfully

Is question in title you ask yourself everyday? Do you? What information do you looked through and analyzed yet? Please, feel free to leave any comments downthere, because I am writing for those who are serching information about good self-publishing recepies.

Have you ever heard someone telling you these words? If you do, than you are probably luckier than me, because I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. It's right, that today's high tech printing methods can help you to publish your book yourself and make a fortune! There are thousands of self-publishers who are making Big Profits right from their home!

Nowdays, you decide to print 100 or 10,000 copies of book you wrote. You can do what many others have - discover a personal goldmine by publishing books prepared in your spare time. Ok, so you are ready to start, aren't you?

But did you read my recent post about disadvantages of self-publishing? If you don't, please take a minute to look it through.

How cheap it is?


It is unbelievable, that I'll tell you that books cost as little as 25 cents? But are you really decided to appreciate yourself so low? Today this kind of book can be sold for 10 dollars! This is a profit of over 3,900%! Too much? Sell your book at 5 dollars and you get more book sold and do not lose you money anyway. Those who don't know the publishing business would find it unbelievable, even though true.

Before publishing your own book, remember to find all mistakes that is possible to find. The price of mistake is very high, so feel yourself ready when you go to print your work.

Can You Afford To Publish Your Book?

Money blinds. It's as simple as that. Aspiring authors ask about the money issue all the time, in varying forms, (How much does it cost to publish? How much will I get paid in royalties?, etc.) but they can't see beyond that issue to think about the thing that will truly decide the money question


What Do You Want From Your Book?



That is the real question! Once you are clear about what you want out of the publishing process, you can decide what route would be the most satisfying--and profitable--for you. When it comes right down it it, you can spend as much or as little as you want on your book. But how much are you willing to spend to get what you want?

When you aren't clear, you can make poor decisions that won't line up with your goals. For instance, many authors have a goal of making a lot of money, but they won't consider self publishing. The fact is that unless you can immediately sell on the level of an Oprah's Book Club selection or a James Patterson or a Dan Brown, it's going to take a very long time before your royalties add up to much. When you self publish you take on risk, but you stand to gain much more because you get to keep all the profits (unless your agreement with the publishing company you use is a royalties-based one).

Another strong reason to self publish: you can use your first book to build your platform for a bigger deal with a traditional publishing house in the future. Again, you can choose the self publishing deal that's right for you. A print on demand company such as Xlibris charges just $500 for a basic package where you can get your book produced and copies made as they are ordered--so no inventory. Of course, when you pay more, you get more: better design, distribution services, maybe even some marketing help.

The Traditional Road



If your dreams of authorship include larger audiences and the literary status that comes of being published by one of the many arms of Random House, Warner or Simon & Schuster, that's fine--just know that this route isn't exactly free either. No, you don't have to pay a traditional publishing house and yes, they do everything for you (design, distribution, some advertising and marketing), but these days a writer is expected to spend a little too on promoting the book. Many writers are even putting the amount they've set aside in their book proposals. If you're serious about marketing your book, you'll need to set aside at least $10,000. That amount can go as high as $30,000 depending on the amount of travel and other advertising you intend to use.

Smart Money, Dumb Money



Once you understand what you want out of your book, you'll not only know how much you're willing to spend, you'll also know better how to spend it. You can spend it smart or you can spend it dumb. Many writers spend it dumbly because they don't know what they want. If you're spending money on educating yourself about publishing, improving your writing skills, hiring a good editor or book consultant, and marketing that will help you reach your specific, targeted reader, that's all smart money. You will get more out of those dollars than if you had never spent it at all. You are investing in your writing career.

But if you spend money because someone told you this is "the only way you'll ever get this book published" (and you haven't researched any other ways), or buy advertising simply because it's where other books are advertised, or go to writer's conferences with no clear plan of what you want out of them, or pay agents "reader fees", or pay editors whose work you don't know or whose references you haven't checked, that's dumb money. You'll put those dollars out there and see little or no return.

So I guess the bad news is publishing isn't free. The good news is you have a choice as to how much you spend and where you spend it. Be an educated consumer as well as an educated--and talented--writer. You'll find that to have a book published in the way you want it published is still in the end--priceless.

Forget About "Talent"!

How is a writer to access her deepest and most powerful wells of creativity? How do we tap into our talent, our genius, our greatest potential for success? Writing classes often tell us how to plot, or structure, or build characters, or create poetic images, but the question of accessing our excellence is a slippery and elusive one. It is possible we’ll need to go outside our usual sources to find an answer.

Many will merely say “be born with talent,” coldly suggesting that writers are “born” with a particular amount of potential, and that one either has this or not. And you know? There is a certain amount of truth to this. It is hard to argue with the idea that geniuses like Mozart or Shakespeare were gifted. But the nature versus nurture argument is both fascinating and, for the average person, irrelevant. After all, since we can’t go back and choose our grandparents, what are we to do? Just abandon our dreams of excellence if we don’t happen to be one of the gifted few?

I often say something to students that is both deadly serious and a slight (and deliberate) exaggeration. It is this “I don’t believe in talent. Every time I’ve ever gotten close to an excellent performer in any discipline, all I’ve seen is a lifetime of hard, honest work.”

Why would I say something like this? Because it is the way I truly feel. The fact is that I’ve seen endless people fail due to lack of honest work. And given those years or decades of work, I’ve seen few fail for lack of talent.

The truth is that if “talent” exists, it seems to be the capacity for long, concentrated periods of tunnel-vision focus, combined with a unique capacity for digging into themselves to find truths most of us are reluctant to reveal. These phenomenal men and women sacrifice outside interests, relationships, and sometimes their health and sanity to focus on their divine obsession. And yes, if you find a group of these people, some will rise higher than others. But the primary gift of art is to be able to spend your life in the act of creation. And to do that, you don’t need to be “the best” (whatever THAT means). All you need to do is to get into the top twenty percent in your field, and you’ll do just fine.

And that is achievable with focus and honesty. But what exactly do I mean by that?

FOCUS

1) Can you write 500 words a day for twenty years?

2) Can you concentrate for an hour at a time without stopping for coffee, phone calls, or bathroom breaks?

3) Can you shut out the voices of doubt and failure? Then you have a chance. In my own life, writing was simply my only career goal. I would rather have failed as a writer than succeeded at anything else. I was willing to do ANYTHING ethical and healthy to reach that goal, and every single day I asked myself new questions about how I could do it, who I could ask, what I could read, what classes I might attend. Willingness to postpone gratification is essential, because your efforts simply won’t pay off rapidly unless you are in that incredibly lucky fraction of a percent. And there is good news: even if you believe in “talent,” in the real world, an absolutely driven “B” or “C” student will outperform a lazy “A” student almost every time.

HONESTY. This is where the rubber meets the road, the diamond path to excellence.

1) What is your actual current skill level? What is the skill level necessary to make it in your chosen field? Make no mistake: writing is one of the most competitive fields in the world. EVERYONE thinks they can write, and to a degree, they are correct. If you’re going to make your mark, you will have to bring everything you’ve got.

2) Who has the resources you need to bridge the gap between your current and desired skill levels? Remember that they have probably spent a lifetime gathering their knowledge. What can you offer them (that is ethical and healthy for you) to gain their help and support?

3) What do you fear most? Love most? What angers you most? Makes you laugh? Your ability to create memorable characters will be based on the depths of your self-understanding, and capacity to accurately observe the human condition. If you can dig deeply enough, you’ll find an incredible wealth of subject matter, more than enough to last a lifetime. But you must be honest. When writing to stimulate an emotion in your audience, first write to trigger that feeling in yourself. Write for yourself, or for an audience you respect.

4) What is your best effort? There is a great scene in “Walk The Line” where a music producer tells Johnny Cash to imagine he is dying in the street. He has one last song to sing to sum up the totality of his existence. What would that song be? Questions like this cut through the b.s. Don’t try to be clever. Just tell the truth.

5) What do you actually believe human beings are? At the core of us, under all of the ugly and pretty. What are we? How do you explain the differences and conflicts between human beings: black and white, gay and straight, male and female. What do you think love is? What causes war? Why do we dream? Your own unique answers to these questions will point you toward your personal “voice.”

6) What is the nature of the universe? Of God? Is there anything out there? Are we alone? While it is possible to write stories and screenplays from a variety of philosophical positions, the writer who knows herself and has a position on the nature of life will outperform a “brilliant” writer who has nothing to say. Dig deep.

These two aspects, (1) hard work, and (2) honesty, will keep you busy for a lifetime, and take you to the very edge of your potential as a writer. And after all, if you haven’t used up all the potential you were given at birth, it hardly makes sense to complain that you didn’t get more!

Disadvantages of self-publishing or First steps in Business

Self-publishing can be a smart choice for beggining writers. It's cost-effective and relatively fast way which pays much better than standard royalty contracts. Another bonus is that it lets you maintain control over the publishing process. But what about downsides:

First of all, you need starting cash. Not much, but! Print on Demand (POD) allows writers to print a few copies at a hefty price, but this is not so practical for the author who intends to make a commercial success of self-publishing his book. Check prices of typographies in your home city, to take a correct numbers. You need to get a low unit cost to be able to give those review copies away. I found it is cheap to head somewhere in new European Union countries to find a better prices: they stand a hole book-publishing proces for between 3,000 and 12,000 euro to produce 5,000 copies.

Another point you'll need to discover, than you are not just "printing" the book; there are fees for editing, interior design/typesetting, film production, cover design, printing, freight, etc. This prices can varies on length, number of colors on the cover, hardcover versus soft, interior photos. Remember, this is a business.

Remember, that you need to sell a book, not just to give it away to your friends. So, if writing may have been great fun, sales for many authors arent. Aspects of PR make them feel about as comfortable as going bear hunting with a switch. So, if you're affraid about merchandising something, than do not waste your time on self-publishing. There are ways around this where you can still promote and be comfortable. You can hook up with distributors that will place your books in the chains and independent bookstores. But, another secret is that only 48% are sold in bookstores. Other books are merchandised via other venues such as direct mail, in catalogs, Internet, etc.

The Importance of Proofreading or The Price of Mistake

After a great pause, because of my sickness, I wanna start this blog again. Now I'll be writting in English. Why? This is the best way to get some revenue from my writting work. As I was ill, I found the thing I want to put my strength in: Self Publishing.

As I know, my language is still subject to improve, so the first theme I want to touch is Proofreading. Proofreading your article is one of the most important steps in self publishing. When you send your article off to be produced it will be published exactly as you send it, with mistakes and all other bugs in it. Some people think that this way published articles look "amateurish". One of the reasons for this is that many self published authors publish their works with spelling and grammar errors. Don't let yourself be one of those authors. Ask someone you know well to check the work of yours, before you send off it to the publisher

Then, when you are done, ask your family do the same. If they point you a mistake, don't be ungenerous. Correct it! If you catch a mistake after it has been sent off you can probably still correct it, but at a price. How much? If we speak on online-writting correction is priceless, until the article wasn't deployed on many of servers. If we speak on newspaper article or book story there are a few examples of what some companies charged to make corrections:

  • AuthorHouse: Before publication the cost of corrections runs $2.00 per correction plus a $25.00 minimum fee. A new printed proof copy is $35.00. If you need to make a correction after the book has gone into publication the cost is $225.00.

  • Trafford: The cost of corrections is $55.00 per hour with a one hour minimum. A new proof after the corrections are made is $15.00.

In addition to this price, having to correct mistakes will also cost time. Corrections can take weeks or even months to be completed.
